the myth about mp3 bit rates
March 30, 2008This is a very interesting test to see if you can detect the difference in audio quality between a 128kb and 320kb bit rate mp3 file. I got the answer wrong when I tried it, although this is a bit misleading since the audio source was probably not as clear as it could be.
I bet you could notice the difference in quieter songs, if you turn up the audio. However, the test makes a valid point - lot of people regard 128kb as barely listenable, but that really just snobbish b.s. because unless you’re an audio engineer or have very expensive speakers, you won’t be able to tell the difference with most types of music. You can definitely hear the difference between 64kb and 128kb, but anything above that is pretty negligible.
My 128kb MP3’s are actually far superior in audio quality to my satellite radio. I rip most of my CD’s at 256kb, just so I can have them in more of “archival” quality - but it’s really just wasting space on your ipod.
This really is sad. It seems a bit homophobic to me, but I’m sure that all emo kids, or maybe even the majority aren’t gay. But I don’t know. I’m old, and have never even heard of emo kids.
